D.J. sat down on her father's bed, trying to think around the fear and suspicion clouding the edges of her mind. Something crunched beneath her, and she pulled out several photos. A quick glance revealed them to be pictures of the Lakeview police station. The pictures McCall had taken for his book, a lifetime ago, when they'd had nothing more serious to worry about than his deadline and her suspensionand putting up with each other until they could complete their jobs. Had only a mere week passed since she'd shot a teenager? She'd put a bullet in that kid and then pushed the reaction away into the sad, cold part of her where she kept all her emotions. Then she'd met Christian McCall and Josietwo people who had shown her what she lacked in her life. Could she ever go back to the way things had been before she'd known them? Did she want to?
While her thoughts tumbled over each other in her mind, D.J. rifled through the photos. The last picture made her stop and stare, her questions fleeing in a sudden flash of understanding.

She'd forgotten about him in all the excitement.
